Day 215 - Sun 5th August - Olympics Day 9 - What to watch?

After what was billed as the greatest day/night of British sport with the 6 Gold medals you would have thought today was going to be a bit of a come down.  The fact i only had 5 hours kip didn't help. Surely today will be one of those flat tired long lazy Sundays?

No! Ladies marathon this morning, Murray playing Federer in the final at Wimbledon,  mixed doubles (my favourite and I'm not talking about Vodka and Brandy) Sailing,  track cycling (Omnium!!!) and finally a full night of Athletics culminating in the 100 metre final and the legendary Usian Bolt. Not a bad come down that huh?

I was pretty perky after having such a top day yesterday. Though totally knackered. It was so cool to spend it with proper old pals. They are quality. Fun, real, no ego, no bullshit and it was a tip top and tidy day. The fact that the Gold rush in the evening happened just topped it all off, though i was still smiling at the Fat bloke scotch egg eating cage fighting Gymnastics this morning.

I knocked out an early morning....meeting (see i can be spiritual and clean when i want to be) and then had good intentions to go home, write my blog, do a run, hit the gym, watch Olympics.

I got home and went to bed for 6 hours. Clare Balding talked me through the afternoon's activies on the Tellie. What a fine anchor she is. Authoritative, professional, interested, enthusiastic and unflappable. She is the female Dougie Donnelly. Very underrated and still her hair bestrode the Olympic arena with all the splendour of a Roman Emperor. It is Epic.

My main movement all day was on my right hand.......to flick between sports on the red button. (See i can keep it clean) any other was just too taxing. I was seriously monged. It even took effort to blink. Running and gym was as far away as Olympic Gold right now. I was doing the Olympic mong. Pausing only to turn over the pages of the papers as they all carried 400 page Olympic pull out souvenir specials (who actually keeps them as souvenirs?)

You need a week to read all the Sunday papers and watch all the sport. You need to be committed, disciplined, lazy and single with no kids or friends to dedicate yourself to the Olympics. I watched all day.

I watched the marathon and marvelled at all the crowds turning up in the pissing rain. Amazing. That is the hallmark of London Olympics, the support is superb. Having done a few marathons myself i know how important and incredible large support is. It really helps.

Then it was time for Ben Ainslie to win his 4th Gold medal in succession. I owe him and all sailing fraternity an apology. I dissed it earlier in the week as a TV sport, but this was gripping. Basically in a nutshell all Ainslie had to do was finish in front of the Danish bloke to win. So he spent the entire race fucking the Dane up. That brought the whole sport up in my estimations and was pleased to see him win, even though i had no idea what was going on. It was Gold for GB and i am eating a massive slice of humble pie tonight. Bad from me. Sailing is cool. I'm no fairweather fickle fan am i?

Up next was Andy Murray on centre court against the mighty Federer in the Olympic final. It was Only 4 weeks since he was beaten and blabbed like a baby making the GP (Gen Public) all melt and respect him more. What happened in the next 2 hours signified exactly why the Olympics is so special and that something magical is happening at London 2012.

He totally annihilated Federer. Straight sets. BOOM! 2 hours of intense breathtaking tennis that reduced the Fed Express to the Fed 5 items or less (i really like that line. It's quality) Murray stormed to Gold at a frenzied Wimbledon. You knew that the Olympics had created something special. That never happened in a Grand Slam.

And so signified another great thing about the Olympics. If he would have done that in any other Grand Slam tournament it would have been huge. It would have been everywhere for days on end. Here. it was big news for around 20 minutes then it moved onto the next sport and medal chance. That's the Olympics. It creates heroic sporting achievements and then quickly moves on there the next. It was compelling stuff. Gold for Murray and GB  and he even mumbled to the National Anthem, though don't we all?

Then i watched The Omnium, a weird and complicated Cycling track race. Think Decathlon on wheels and you wouldn't be far off the truth. GB won bronze in this event. I love track cycling so much in case you may have missed this before.

It then took all my energy and determination to actually get up and go out to my friends, All i did was actually move from a bed (my house) to a sofa (in another house). It was an Olympic effort. I was the laziest man in the world. My dedication to the horizontal was immense.

The Athletics all evening was interesting, Team GB were a little shit actually, compared to the previous evening, although they won a silver in the women's 400m with a heroic run from Christine Ohuruogu. Then at 9.50am it was time for the main event. The 100m final. The most famous race on the planet. A truly global event .

I of course wanted Bolt to win, anyone but that arrogant tool Justin Gatlin, who has been banned twice for doping. Not that I'm moralistic about doping but he has never showed remorse or change, which suggests he's still at it, just getting better ones to mask it. I don't care if people have taken drugs. Just admit it and move on.

The race build and hype was huge and Bolt didn't disappoint, ripping the field apart with 9.63 seconds He was awesome. A total legend and a world icon. Fast and funny. The man is a superstar. It was brilliant. Time for the chicken nuggets.

So that was Sunday. Not quite as Super as Saturday but on the positive side i managed to lay down for over 10 hours and consume Jessica Enis' entire yearly eating plan. GB won 2 golds, Usain beat the arrogant American cheat and tomorrow i am 11 years sober. So it hasn't been too bad a come down. Stuffed, sleepy and happy i made my way home and boated a whole Veineta. Man, i know how to celebrate. I'm just proper rock and roll. Move over Crstal Meth and Vodka. The Vieneta's taking over now. Word up.
